Cannabis Conversations: Sativa and Indica

Sativa and Indica are some of the most popular buzzwords in cannabis, but what do they really mean and how accurate are these definitions in comparison to the actual quality of the cannabis you’re consuming?

With so many options available in the market today, it can seem helpful to narrow things down by categorizing them into three groups: Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid. However, this categorization can also be limiting, so let’s explore what these three terms mean and their place within the broader picture of cannabis.

The main differences between Indica and Sativa evolve from growth patterns and location of origin, but ultimately, the effects of these strains are what matter most.

It's essential to remember that cannabis provides a variety of complex and intricate effects. These effects differentiate from person to person, so as cannabis consumers, we should observe what works best for ourselves and keep track of our experiences.

Tapping into the “whats” and the “whys” are essential for understanding how cannabis consumption can best work for you.

Sativa is typically thought to be energizing, clear-headed, and more focus oriented as opposed to its counterpart Indica, which is associated with a more physical, stony, and euphoric high. Hybrids are left to cover ‘everything in between’.

Due to the lengthy illegal status of cannabis, it is nearly impossible to trace the complete lineage of each strain accurately. As a result, products can be labeled as Sativa, Hybrid, or Indica at the brand's discretion, even if these claims are not entirely accurate.

The fact is, most of the strains available today are a result of multiple genetic crosses, making everything on the market a form of Hybrid by definition.

So, does this mean Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid labels are meaningless? Not at all! They represent one small aspect of the vast cannabis landscape. A product's terpene profile, lineage, harvest and package dates, THC percentage, and other factors are all critical pieces of information to consider alongside your preference for Sativa or Indica.
