How to Read a Cannabis Label: Cannabinoids

Ever picked up a jar of flower and seen something like this?  ⬇

THC: 0.425% | THCa: 31.271% | CBD: 0.00% | CBDa: 0.00%
Harvest Date: 5/5/2025 | Package Date: 6/5/2025 | Use By: 5/5/2026

Our favorite brands utilize their packaging to provide a wealth of detail for the strain and specific batch. But what you see up there is the state-mandated info that must be included on every product sold in Illinois. This information is basically your cannabis report card, but for this blog, let’s focus on the Cannabinoids.

Illinois only requires THC, THCa, CBD, and CBDa to be listed on packaging. Sometimes you’ll also see “Total Cannabinoids,” but that number can be misleading, as brands don’t always explain what that number means. It’s not uncommon to find a label that boasts...

THC: 0.425%, THCa: 31.271% CBD: 0% CBDa: 0% - Total Cannabinoids: 33.005%

The numbers don’t add up because there are trace amounts of other cannabinoids (CBC, CBG, CBN, etc) that aren’t required to be shown on packaging.

Since most of us are interested in the THC that will get into our system, Here’s the important part: you can’t just add THC + THCa together!
When you light up (aka decarb), a chunk of THCa burns off in the process.

The real formula is: (THCa x 0.877) + THC = True Potential THC

That’s why our menu doesn’t just copy labels—we show you the true potential THC % for flower, pre-rolls, and concentrates. Translation: the number you see on our site is the number that more accurately represents THC % when you spark up.
