How to Read a Cannabis Label: Package Date
Ever picked up a jar of flower and seen something like this? 👇
THC: 0.425% | THCa: 31.271% | CBD: 0.00% | CBDa: 0.00%
Harvest Date: 5/5/2025 | Package Date: 6/5/2025 | Use By: 5/5/2026
Our favorite brands like to utilize their packaging to provide a wealth of detail for the strain and specific batch, but what you see there, is the state-mandated info that must be included on every product sold in Illinois. This information is basically your cannabis report card, but for this article, let’s focus on the Package Date.
📦 Package Date
This is when the product was tested, sealed, and made ready for sale. For flower, it also marks the official end of curing. To us, the package date may be the most important date because it provides us with how long the product has been dormant in packaging. If you bought flower that had package date within a month of your purchase, it would undoubtedly be fresher than flower packaged six months ago.
In Illinois, everything has to be packaged at the facility before heading to a dispensary—so when it’s on our shelves, you know it hasn’t been tampered with. Whether it’s a 28g or 1g joint, in a glass jar or mylar, once the item is sealed in its packaging, it cannot be opened until purchase.
